URL: Changes-This-Posting: InuYasha on hiatus again. (Still busy.) Furry Anime List (Version 2.0) ROUGH DRAFT 10.1 Maintained & Updated by PeterCat Originated by Scratch This list was originated several years ago by Scratch, who has since disappeared from the Internet. With the recent surge in popularity of anime on cable networks in the USA, and in particular "InuYasha" on Cartoon Network (curently on hiatus), I decided to resurrect and update the list, admittedly with the ulterior motive that I want to learn what's worth buying or downloading. Initially I will update this text listing for periodic posting to furry and anime newsgroups, and eventually produce a separate section on the Furry InfoPage which will include links to suppliers and related web sites. This is a ROUGH DRAFT. Some entries have not been fully updated, in particular with respect to availability. Something may have been listed as "Not Available" on the old list, three years ago, and carried through on this posting, which has since been fansubbed or commercially released. Please be patient; you can help by spending a couple of minutes to look up the distributor's name online and forwarding it to me, instead of just writing to tell me it's wrong. Eventually I'll check everything through a database such as animenfo.com. Also, I've tried to indicate [MINOR] where the furries aren't predominant, but not having seen all entries personally, some entries that should have that tag may be lacking it. Updates and contributions (informational, not financial) are encouraged, please feel free to write! -- PeterCat ======== INTRODUCTION ======== What is "Furry Anime"? The basic definition for a "furry" is an anthropomorphized animal character. In other words, an animal character given human-like attributes, such as sapience and often a humanoid form. The term "furry" is a misnomer, as a creature does not need to have fur to be "furry" in this sense. Other terms sometimes interchangeable with a "furry" in this sense are "zoomorph", "morph", "anthropomorph" or (debatably) "funny animal". (from the alt.fan.furry semi-FAQ, posted to alt.fan.furry on the 8th and 25th of each month) Anime in the simplest of terms is Japanese animation. To some, the term "Anime" invokes images of giant mecha, scantily clad women, scantily clad cat-morphs, and giant guns. To others it may be super-humans with psychic powers, and demons with incredibly manipulative tentacles. To others still, it's a form of storytelling, the retelling of old legends in an animated forum. And to some, it's just animated entertainment. So, put them together, and you get Japanese animation that centers around a furry universe, or that features a furry character or characters. There are many examples of feline morphs, werewolves, kitsune, tanuki, intelligent dogs, anthropomorphic hippopotami, and... well, read the list and find out for yourself! If you are still in need of more in depth definitions, or just want more info in general, there are numerous electronic resources available. Newsgroups include alt.fan.furry and the rec.arts.anime.* hierarchy. Or just enter "anime" or "furry" in your favorite web search engine and start following links. For purposes of this list, I'm focusing mainly on Japanese productions, with the occasional notable Western effort included (e.g. "Gold Digger OAV"). Teamouse Chanezumi's FurFilms List at is the place to find details about other productions, although there will be some crossover (e.g. Disney's release of Miyazaki films). I'm also omitting well-known shows aimed at very young children (e.g. "Hello Kitty," "Pokemon"). ======== ORGANIZATION ======== Entries are shown thusly: Title - The title as it's most commonly known in the USA. Alternate and Japanese titles are shown in parentheses. Furry characters - Meet the furries! An overview of species, names, special powers, etc. [MINOR] will appear here unless the characters play a pivotal role in the story. [OCCASIONAL] indicates the furries feature in certain episodes of an otherwise non-furry series. Keywords - Broad categorization of the story and notable elements. Drama, comedy, romance, fantasy, action (bloodless violence), violence (bloody action), nudity, sex, fanservice (butt/crotch shots), etc. "Classic" indicates a well-known story told with anthropomorphic characters, a la Disney's "Robin Hood." [N.B. I have not viewed many of the entries personally and am going by the description. Feel free to correct or amplify my designation.] Format - Whether the anime was a theatrical movie, TV show, or original animation for video (OAV or OVA). Unless otherwise indicated, TV episodes are approx. 22-30 minutes in length. Availability - How to get it: watch it on TV, North American commercial release (subtitled or dubbed), fansub (subtitled by anime fans, can be downloaded online or obtained on VHS or VCD), import from a specialty dealer (usually without translation). Supplier name is given if known; see Sources section after the list. [CURRENT] indicates something now in theaters, or being currently telecast. Summary or Review - What is it about, and is it good? Contributors' names appear in parentheses at the end. Some info is unknown for some titles. If you can help fill in the blanks, please do! ======== THE NOT LIST ======== By the way, "Gunsmith Cats" is not furry. Nor is: Beast City Can Can Bunny (but it's funny) Cat's Eye Demon Beast Invasion ======== THE LIST ======== =^_^= A =^_^= The Adventures of Mini-Goddess (AA! Megami Sama: Chicchaitte Kotoha Benridane; Ah! My Goddess: Being Small is Convenient; Superdeformed Ah My Goddess) Rats Comedy, Magic, Mecha, Science-Fiction TV (48 8-minute episodes) Distributor: Pioneer Animation Series of shorts based on the Ah My Goddess series. For reasons unknowable to us mortals, the three Norse goddesses of fate (currently living in Japan) apparently spend their free time as mouse-size versions of themselves. Stories are generally parodies aimed at a large number of genres and specific shows (for example, when the air conditioner goes berserk it is an excuse for an "arctic explorer" story, or the Godzilla/giant monster parody when one of the characters turns into a giant mold monster). Has a rat as one of the main characters. (blaidd) =^_^= Akazukin Cha Cha (Li'l Red Riding Hood ChaCha) [MINOR] Wolf Morph, Mermaid Comedy, Fantasy, Magic, Adventure Movie, TV (74 episodes, 1994); OAV (3 episodes, 1995) Not Available This is the story of ChaCha, a young witch who is struggling to learn magic. Her teacher, Seravi, decides the best way for that to happen is for her to go to "magic school." She is joined by her friends, Riiya (who is a young werewolf and changes into a cute wolf cub) and Shiine-chan (a wizard in training). Along the way, they encounter more friends with magical powers, including Orin-chan the ninja, and Marin the mermaid. (http://www.anime.net/~kfc/REVIEW/REVIEWS/ChaCha.html) [Title, Characters, Format amplified by blaidd] =^_^= Alakazam The Great (Saiyu-ki) Anthropomorphic (and very foolish) monkey? Folk Tale Movie (1961) Distributor: Toeiscope/Cinemascope The king of the monkeys gets a swelled head and challenges Buddha. As punishment, he is locked in a cave until he learns modesty. As redemption, he is sent on a journey. Based on an old Chinese story. Co-directed by Osamu Tezuka, Teiji Yabushita, and Daisaku Shirakawa, this was the first widely-distributed (and successful) Japanese animated product in the U.S. The U.S. version was re-edited and the religion downplayed. Frankie Avalon did Alakazam's voice. Other voices included Jonathan Winters, Sterling Holloway, Arnold Stang, and Dodie Stevens. (Rune) =^_^= All-Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku (Bannou Buka Nekomusume) Female feline android Science Fiction, Action, Comedy OAV (3 episodes, 1992; 12 episodes, 1998); TV series (12 episodes, 1998) Distributor (OAVs): ADV Films Fansub (TV): Nine lives, nine hundred horsepower. When inventor Kyusaku Natsume transfers the brain of his son Ryunosuke's cat into a top secret android body, he doesn't lose a family pet...he gains a daughter! Nuku Nuku may appear to be a teenage girl, but her cute and cuddly exterior hides both the superhuman strength of the world's most advanced android chassis and the lightning quick senses and reflexes of a domestic feline, abilities she'll need to defend Ryunosuke from the forces of Mishima Heavy Industries, a giant conglomerate run by the world's most ruthless businesswoman, Akiko Mishima, who, not-so-coincidentally, just happens to be Natsuma's ex-wife and Ryunosuke's mother! To call the resulting conflict the greatest custody battle of all time is more than a bit of an understatement, especially since Akiko has stacked the deck by employing Mishima Heavy Industries' ridiculously powerful corporate muscle in her efforts to steal back Ryunosuke! Such a contest might seem just a bit uneven, but even a state of the art gunship is just a cat toy for Nuku Nuku. (ADV) The reason Nuku Nuku is so catlike is because, brain-wise, she IS a cat; a pet kitten who was saved from death after being fatally injured by having her brain put in a new body. And WHAT a body! (Frank) Yep, can't swim worth a darn, at least, not until she gets swim fins. The ears pop up when she pulls all the stops out and goes on the offensive. Dad invented her, Mom wants the kid back from Dad, and if the kid is injured, Dad looses him. Nuku Nuku was supposed to be an all purpose attack android. Mom is a compulsive overachiever, as well, and _seriously_ takes advantages of her administrative assistants. Good thing Grandpa(?) (the head of the company) hasn't found out yet. (Harvey) =^_^= The Amazing 3 (Wonder 3, W3) Aliens who take the form of earth creatures Science Fiction, Action? Romance? TV Series (1965) Import: A council of alien civilizations sends three spies to Earth to gather data on the planet so they can decide whether to destroy or spare it. The aliens transform into the shapes of the first Earth creatures they encounter: a duck, a horse, and a rabbit. Ronnie, the engineer, becomes the horse, Zero becomes the duck, and Bonnie becomes a rabbit. They are befriended by Kenny, a boy. (Rune) =^_^= Armored Dragon Legend Villgust (Koryu Densetsu Villgust) Ryuquir, a female feline and Murob, a male wolfen warrior. Fantasy, Comedy OAV (2 episodes; 1994) Fansub: This is a spoof of every Japanese computer RPG that I've seen. The setting is in a fantasy world, where an evil deity has been revived, bent on destruction. It's up to the intrepid heroes to defeat the evil one and save the world. About as typical of a plot as you could ever hope for. The story starts off with the group divided into two parties, and they end up confronting each other in battle due to the evil one manipulating them to think that the other is the enemy. Highlights include the introduction of Ryuquir, who wins my vote for the bounciest feline ever, the escape from the castle dungeon, and the really cheesy traps that were set by the evil guys. In all, lots of fun and mayhem. (Scratch) =^_^= Around The World With Willy Fogg Various anthropomorphic characters Classic, Adventure TV Series Commercial Release; UK DVD expected June 2003 (unconfirmed) An anthropomorphic version of "Around The World In 80 Days" produced for Spanish TV. The English-language version has some good voice work, especially Mr. Fogg (a lion). (Rune) =^_^= Ashita no Nadja (Tomorrow's Nadja) [MINOR] Minature dancing lions Adventure, Drama TV Series (2003) Fansub: In the early 20th century, the girl Nadja grew up in an orphanage on the outskirts of London. She believed her parents to be dead, but just before her 13th birthday a trunk is delivered to her, which contains her mother's dress, a notebook and a letter -- and the hope that her mother may still be alive. However, some threatening men arrive and set fire to the orphanage in an attempt to capture Nadja. She escapes, and makes her way into the city, where she finds the "Dandelion Troupe" of travelling performers, featuring the acrobatics of the miniature lions Cream and Chocola. Nadja, being bright, energetic, and good at dance, joins the troupe and embarks upon an adventure across Europe in search of her mother. A children's series from the producers of the popular "Ojamajo Doremi" (1999-2002). (PeterCat) =^_^= Azumanga-Daioh Cats Comedy, Schoolkids TV (130 5-minute episodes, 2002) Fansub: Originally serialized in the very popular "Electric Shock Daio" manga as well as on a short online movie and a DVD given out with a magazine. The story revolves around high school girls. Each of the main characters has a colorful and attractive personality for comic fans, such as the "cool" girl, the "natural" girl, the girl with glasses, the gifted 10-year-old, etc. as well as weird older teachers. (Rewritten from AnimeNfo) It's furry by virtue of the recurring "mantrap cat", not to mention the Iriomote Mountain Cats, which make a significant appearance later on. (Porsupah) And don't forget the running gag involving Chio's father being "not a real cat." (blaidd) =^_^= B =^_^= Bagi (Baghi, Daishizen no Majyu Bagi) The ultimate cat-girl Science Fiction, Action, Romance, Fanservice TV Movie Import, Fansub Bagi is a genetically-engineered anthropomorphic cat woman. She battles to stop further genetic experiments with the aid of her one-time master. They travel to South America to try to find the scientist who has been successful at gene-splicing. Many consider this _the_ furry film. (Rune) Based on Osamu Tezuka's original idea, Tezuka served as the movie's director, character designer, director of animation, cell painter and animator. The sci-fi drama warns us of the danger of genetic manipulation, and man's predilection for playing god. The animated film is presented in real time, i.e. the movie's action mirrors the actual time span. (cdjapan.co.jp) =^_^= Beast Front Line (Demonic Beast Battle Front) Animal/Human genetic experiments Science Fiction, Violence OAV Not Available This is a very violent and gory anime, with a style very similar to the Devilman series. The main character is the result of his father's experiments to merge humans and animals to produce a super-being. While those who have been experimented upon cannot transform 100% into beasts, they can have animal heads and other animal appendages form out of their arms or other parts of their body. They can also grow wings, and in one instance, transform into beast-taurs for a strange battle between a bear and a gorilla with human torsos growing out of their shoulders. The son's mother died in an earlier failed experiment, and the majority of the plot revolves around the son who seeks revenge against his father and the other scientists who experimented on him. The manga author/artist is Ken Ishikawa, and is published by Futabasha/Action Comics DeLuxe. (Scratch) =^_^= Blue Submarine No. 6 (Ao no roku-go) Various aquatic anthros and land furries Action, Science-Fiction OAV (3 30-minute episodes, 1 50-minute episode; 1998) Distributor: Pioneer Animation Post-apocalyptic series about the battle between the remains of the human race and their possible successors, an army of genetically enhanced animals. Blends lots of CG (most backgrounds and ships) with conventional animation (most characters). Main villain is an anthro shark, and there are a large number of fish-women (not quite your conventional mermaids), but land-type furs also show up at times. (blaidd) =^_^= Bono Bono Various 'morphs (otter, squirrel, tanuki, bear, cheetah) Fantasy, Comedy TV Series Not Available Each 15 minute short is about an extremely naive and little slow otter named Bono Bono and his two friends, a very hyperactive squirrel and a tanuki that constantly kicks and curses at Bono Bono. The action takes place on an unnamed island that is inhabited by all sorts of other creatures. (Bryan Chaney) =^_^= Bucket de Gohan Various Morphs Contemporary, Comedy TV Series Not Available A parody of modern-day Japanese business office life. Animals who can stand and talk, works at the city zoo, where their job is to act as if they are "tamed animals caged". Of course, after their shifts, they punch out and go to bar, go home, etc. The relationships portrayed among the animals, and with the human executives, resembles stereotype of modern day Japanese office. (Hiroyuki Hironaga) =^_^= Bunny (Maru Bunny, Yumeiro Bunny, Dream-colored Bunny) Rabbit and fox "mostly human" morphs Sex Single Episode Not Available Bunny (a girl with bunny ears and tail) is living a free idyllic life until one day a kinky fox (again, very human-like) has his way with her. A hunter discovers them and bunny ends up in a strange pet shop run by a pervert. She is sold to a student who is having no luck with women and they both work out their hang-ups. No follow-up episodes, though. (Rune) =^_^= C =^_^= Capricorn Planet full-o-furries Fantasy, Action OAV Distributor: AD Vision A boy finds himself the only human on a world populated by anthropomorphs. An evil cat General is seizing power and the boy, in league with a few of his new friends and a sexy morph dragon, fight to block this. (Rune) =^_^= Catnapped! (Totsuzen! Neko No Kuni Banipal Witt) Tripped out giant canine and humans who get transformed into cats. Fantasy, Adventure Movie Distributor: Pioneer Banipal Witt is the story of two children whose dog, Papadoll, disappears. They look for him for a week but it seems he's completely disappeared. Then one night, a strange alien cat appears at their window, begging for their help. His world, Banipal Witt, is being ravaged by a giant dog and only they can help, he tells them. The children travel to Banipal Witt, a very strange, psychedelic place, and naturally find that the giant dog is their own Papadoll. Only now he's 30 stories tall and a strange psychedelic version of himself. To make matters worse, they find that they are turning into cats. (Rune) =^_^= Chirin's Bell (Ringing Bell, Chirin no suzu) Wolf and Sheep Adventure, Wildlife Movie (1978, 46 minutes) Not Available (Was on RCA label) An outcast ram (Chirin) is befriended by a wolf, who teaches the ram how to fight and defend the flock. The ram eventually has to make a difficult choice, and realizes that in learning to defend the flock, he has become alien to it. Definitely a tragic story. (Harvey) =^_^= Cowboy Bebop "Data Dog" Action, Adventure, Comedy, Science-Fiction TV (26 episodes; 1998), Movie (2001) Distributor (TV): Bandai Entertainment Fansub (Movie): Follows the mostly episodic adventures of a group of bounty hunters all living on the space ship "Bebop". Great animation and music, good stories touching on a variety of genres, and a number of subtle references to other works. One of the secondary characters is Ein, a Welsh corgi "data dog" (and some might argue the brightest one on the ship). (blaidd) =^_^= Curse of the Undead Yoma [MINOR] The only animated Wolftaur that I've ever seen Horror, Violence OAVs (2, 40 minutes each) Distributor: ADV Films The lone warrior against an army of the undead, giant snakes, spiders, and other assorted monsters. On the furry side of things, he is pitted against a wolftaur in the final confrontation. The character animation and design of the wolftaur is exceptional. (Scratch) =^_^= Cutey Honey [MINOR] Several characters with furry traits Action, Science Fiction TV (25 episodes, 1973; 39 episodes, 1997), OAVs (8, 1994) Not Available (1973 TV) Fansub (1997 TV): Distributor (1994 OAV): ADV Films In the episodes that I have seen, Cutey Honey fights some of the minions of an Evil Criminal Overlord. These particular minions start off in female human form, and end up transforming into very cool furry-type creatures, more or less wolfish in form, with various supernatural powers. (Scratch) It's unclear whether the above description refers to the original 1973 series, the 1994 OAV "New Cutey Honey", or the 1997 revival TV series "Cutey Honey Flash." And this is not to be confused with "Cutey Bunny" (as I did in an earlier version of this list) which is something entirely different. (PeterCat) =^_^= Cybersix [MINOR] Bionic panther, other genetic creations? Science Fiction, Action TV series (13 episodes, 1991) Not Available Cybersix is one of the "Cyber-series" beings created by a crazed scientist named Von Reichter. When Cybersix is about to be destroyed by Von Reichter, her own creator who detests this "failed" series for their overly well-made humanity against his plans, she manages to escape from his hands and survives all by herself out in the city of Meridiana. Ever since then, she plays the role of Adrian Seidelman, a high school literature teacher during the day to deceive the eyes of Von Reichter, but at night, she turns Cybersix to protect the good minds from the evil. (Koji Takeuchi, Producer [from web site ]) Originally telecast on Teletoon (Canada) and Fox (USA). =^_^= Cyborg 009 [MINOR] Shapeshifting Cyborg Science Fiction, Action TV Movie Not Available The adventures of nine cyborgs against the forces of Black Ghost (original B&W series), and Neo Black Ghost (color series). The furry aspect is that one of the cyborgs can shift shapes, and is occasionally an animal of some sort. (and he _hates_ dog food!) (Harvey) =^_^= D =^_^= Dark Cat Transformed cats? Violence, Horror, Rape OAV (1991, 50 minutes) Distributor: Kitty Media Hyoi and Ryoi, two warriors for good, purr their way into your heart disguised as a pair of friendly cats. Unfortunately for the people of Japan, their evil enemy, Jukokubo, has released a new terror onto the unsuspecting students at Hyoi and Ryoi's school. As the terror envelopes the student body in an eruption of chaotic, blood thirsty, tentacles, the horror drives their friends to madness and death. Now they must stop the evil plague before the infestation destroys everyone they know and care about. (OtakuWorld) =^_^= Darkstalkers John Talbain (Werewolf), Felicia (Cat-girl), also a fish-guy (think "Creature of the Black Lagoon") and an stocky abominable snowman Action, Adventure, Drama, Fantasy OAV (4 episodes, 1997) Distributor: Viz The world is a dark, brooding place populated by humans, but ruled in reality by powerful beings known as the Darkstalkers, and there is constant conflict between them as they try to determine who is the most powerful of them all. Zombies, vampires, werewolves - all of them compete in contests of strength and sheer will to attain their own personal goals. All of this becomes moot when a race of Aztec robots called the Huitzil decide that humanity isn't worth saving, and start waging war on the world, while in the sky, a solar god from outer space plots the conquest of Earth. And the Darkstalkers must become unwilling allies in order to save the world. (AnimeNFO) The story is apparently much closer to the game, and includes characters seen in Vampire Hunter, Darkstalker's Revenge. I'm not certain who's going to the main character, however. (Atmavictu) This anime primarily revolves around Donovan and Demitri, but Talbain and Felicia have a pretty decent amount of air time in some episodes. (Scratch) =^_^= Di Gi Charat Cat-girls, bunny-girls Comedy, Action TV Series (16 episodes, 1999; 12 episodes, 2002); TV Specials (several, 2000-2001) Fansubs: Based on mascots created for the Japanese game and anime store Gamers, cat-girl Dejiko (aka Di Gi Charat), itty-bitty tiger-girl Puckiko (aka Petit Charat) and spheroid Gema are aliens who come to Earth to become idol singers but, discovering how expensive apartments are, take a job working at a Gamers store in exchange for room and board. On the way, they get into a fight with bunnygirl Usada (aka Rabbie-en-Rose) who declares herself Dejiko's rival and later turns out to be a co-worker at the store. The series is very high-paced and fairly non-sensical with each episode lasting about 3 minutes. The main characters are excessively cute cute cute and spend their time fighting, singing and dancing, or getting into trouble. (OtakuWorld) =^_^= The Dirty Pair [MINOR] Big purple panther pilot Science Fiction, Action, Comedy TV Series (26 episodes, 1985); OAV (12 episodes, 1985-1990); Movie (1987); OAV "Dirty Pair Flash" (15 episodes, 1994) Distributor: ADV Films ("Dirty Pair Flash"); others not available In Dirty Pair there is Mughi, a genetically-upgraded intelligent panther who (among other things) flies the Lovely Angel ship. To quote the Viz filmbook version (this isn't Torren Smith's one, it's a direct translation of the Japanese Sunrise film comic): MUGHI: "A genetically engineered life form with high intelligence (Military Utility Genetic Higher Intelligence)". In the TV show, he looks like a cat-bear hybrid, but in the original novel, he is an *alien* and simply LOOKS like a panther. He also has the power to control energy fields. The panther-like alien beast version also has tentacles on his head usable for manipulation and large, odd looking shell or spine-like ears. The alien-panther version was also used in the Toren Smith/Adam Warren DIRTY PAIR comic. To quote: "Our pet, Mughi, is from some obscure planet ... he's highly intelligent and highly lazy . . . for one thing he can rip people limb from limb, and his claws can slash hull metal ... the spines in his ears can manipulate the entire electromagnetic spectrum." In Dirty Pair Flash, however, Mughi is simply a (seemingly) ordinary kitten that Yuri finds on the street, and adopts: he hasn't grown to his full size yet, and there is no indication he has special abilities. (David L. Pulver) =^_^= Dominion Tank Police Annapuna and Unipuma, the sexy puma twins Action, Adventure, Comedy, Science-Fiction, Nudity? OAVs (4 episodes, 1989; 6 episodes, 1993) Distributors: US Manga Corps (1989 OAV); Manga Entertainment (1993 OAV) The future, Newport City. Crime is rampant, and the criminals have heavy weapons to commit their dastardly deeds. The solution? Arm the police with even Bigger Guns! Thus was formed the Tank Police. Unfortunately, the police end up almost as bad as the criminals, with the scenery, nearby buildings, and citizen's cars becoming tank fodder for the ensuing battles. Episode one also has the infamous strip tease featuring Annapuna and Unipuma taking it all off to distract the Tank Police from their task of arresting them (I still want to know where they hid those guns! :) Sadly, not only are the twins androids, but they are also only furry in the minimalist terms, with just cat-ears to enhance their countenance. Even so, they are still damn yiffy! So, if you like big guns, explosions, scantily clad cat-girls, giant armored vehicles, and lots of laughs, this you'll want to track down this classic series. (Scratch) =^_^= Doraemon Robotic Feline Comedy, Family, Schoolkids, Science-Fiction TV series (27 episodes, 1973) Import: A boy from the future looks back on his ancestor, realizing that the kid had an awfully boring life. He decides to give his ancestor a gift, a little robot kitty. Unfortunately, the boy didn't have much money, and all he could afford was a factory reject... (Harvey) =^_^= Dr. Slump Too many to mention Comedy?, Science Fiction? A few TV seasons Japan only Akira Toriyama crazy series about an inventor and his daughter/sister/ robotic creation. A great deal of the supporting cast are animal-morphs, who seem to live with humans harmoniously without anyone really caring about the difference. One of the supporting characters is a boy who turns into a tiger whenever a female touches him. (Wei-Hwa Huang) =^_^= Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z Anthro (and slightly perverted) pig Adventure, Action, Folklore Lots of shows Commercial Release The plot of these two basically revolves around Songoku and his friends and family trying to get the seven dragon balls which, when collected, bring forth a magic dragon which can grant a single wish. Most of the time, Goku spends trying to prevent various bad guys from getting their hands on the balls. Dragon Ball Z takes place 5 years after the end of Dragon Ball. Most of the characters are the same, and the plot still revolves around finding the dragon balls, but it is now considerably more violent. Anyway, my point is, in both series, there is an anthropomorphic, pig (dresses and acts human) named Oolong, who is a shapeshifter and is extremely perverted (he once turned himself into a pair of women's panties!) (Arnold Kim) Characters broadly based on those in the classic Chinese folk tale "Journey to the West." (PeterCat) =^_^= Dragon Half Dragon morph, named Mink Action, Comedy Two 30-min OAVs Commercial Release Mink is the result of a gallant knight who went off to slay a dragon and ended up marrying the dragon instead. She's a half-dragon, half-human cross breed with dragon horns, a tail, and a sexy body. Mink and her two human friends get into many misadventures in a worlds that seems to be half-fantasy, half-Japanese pop culture and laced with tons of wackiness and silly jokes. Only two episodes were produced because of copyright problems. (Wei-Hwa Huang) A half girl, half dragon who has fallen in love with the country's premiere dragon slayer. He doesn't return the affection. (Harvey) "Not Dragon! Dragon Half!" To be exact she was half dragon half human. Her father was an adventurer sent to slay a vicious dragon, who turned out to be not so vicious. They fell in love got married and had Mink. It's extremely funny. (Matthew Philip Clark) =^_^= Dragon League Dragon transformation Action, Sports Format unknown Availability unknown Tokio and his father Amon go to the soccer country of Elevenia where they see a parade of the strongest soccer team of that country, the Winners. Amon challenges the team captain Leon to a soccer battle and, when Amon loses, Leon turns him into a miniature dragon. Tokio sees the fight and decides to challenge against Leon so that Amon can become human again. (OtakuWorld) =^_^= Dragon Pink Feline female slave-girl Action, Adventure, Nudity? Sex? OAV (3 volumes) Commercial Release Another spoof on the computer game RPG genre. In the second OAV, we start with a generic looking "character selection" screen, and the standard characters are picked. A hero, an elf, a barbarian, lets see... one extra slot. Lets go with a female cat-girl slave! And as if that wasn't humiliating enough, wait until you see what "armor" he has in store for her. :) Hijinks ensue. (Scratch) =^_^= Dream Hunter Rem Shapeshifting Canine and Feline companions Action? Movie Import (Vol 1-4) Small dog and small cat (pets) turn into ferocious dog/wolf and mountain lion. (Jerry Shaw) =^_^= E =^_^= Ebichu the Housekeeping Hamster (Oruchuban Ebichu, Ebichu Minds the House) Hamster Comedy, Raunch, Sex, Violence TV (24 episodes, 2000) Fansub: Do not confuse this with "Hamtaro"! The similarity ends in that they both have cute hamsters as main characters. I seriously doubt that the ones in Hamtaro routinely walk in on their mistress and her good-for-nothing boyfriend and then get smashed into a bloody pulp, for example. From Gainax's web site: "It was said that it couldn't be animated because of its inflammatory content. But Anno Hideaki and Gainax succeeded, without deleting any of the naughty dialogue or images from the manga. The story is full of words considered unsuitable for broadcast, plus violence, all in stark contrast to the apparent cuteness of Ebichu." (blaidd) I haven't seen it, but judging from the reviews on AnimeNfo, the raunchiness and tone of the jokes is akin to "South Park." (PeterCat) =^_^= El Hazard Cat Armor (I don't make up these things!) Fantasy, Action, Adventure OAV (7 episodes) Distributor: Pioneer Three high school kids and their teacher are transported to a fantasy world where they become involved in war and intrigue. The hero happens to be a dead ringer for the local princess (despite being the opposite sex) and is persuaded to impersonate her, there are giant insects (and their sexy queen) planning on taking over the world, a demon girl who happens to be a wind-up robot, super-powered priestesses, etc. Sort of like Tenchi (same design staff, I think) but with a tighter plot and the same sort of high-energy action comedy. There is also a talking cat that also acts as body armor for our hero. (David L. Pulver) =^_^= The Enemy is the Pirate (Teki wa Kaizoku!, The Pirate is the Enemy) Cats. Lots and Lots of Cats. Space, Action, Comedy OAV (6 episodes, year unknown) Not Available Apparently in the future space pirates are a big problem, big enough to have an organization devoted to hunting them down. This action/comedy series follows two partners who work for this organization (at least until recently): Latell and Apulo. Latell's human. Apulo... isn't. He insists that he is not a cat, but I'm not sure he is fooling anyone (he also claims to be a prince). Unfortunately these two don't get along too well. Apulo is usually more concerned with finding a snack than saving his human companion. Needless to say, this tends to irritate Latell, who sometimes breaks out the heavy artillery in order to turn his partner into a new fur coat. Chaos generally ensues. Like the Dirty Pair, however, they generally manage to win in the end (though if there's anything left _to_ win...) Now, guess who finds out about a new secret weapon that can turn anything sentient on a planet into a cat? (This one is pretty obscure, to put it mildly, but worth hunting down.) (blaidd) =^_^= F =^_^= Fam and Ihrlie - Ruin Explorers Elf/Squirrel/ears-n-tail anime girl and her "occasionally a mouse" partner Science Fiction, Adventure, Comedy OAV(2 eps) Commercial Release In the future, Fam & Ihrlie explore the ruins of lost technologic empires in search of valuables. One is human and the other is a cat-morph. (Hmmm, sounds familiar...) Based on the manga series from RPG magazine. Forgot to mention: The human character can turn into a mouse. Her cat friend doesn't mind. (Rune) Seems that Ihrlie turns into a mouse whenever she uses a lot of magical power (apparently because of a curse). Very funny stuff. (Scratch) From the liner notes on this character: "Fam is a female Wiggan who can hold conversations with spirits and animals. She is pure -- but a goof. In magic, she's only a beginner -- but her hidden magical ability seems to be quite a lot. The Wiggan are a race that live in lonely woods and mountain draws. They are more like elves/sprites than people. Wiggans have long ears and a tail." Her seiyuu [voice actress] says in an interview at the end of the of the first LD that she's a cross between a elf and a squirrel. It was a portal which led to another world, and monsters invaded into our world from there. This is an adventure Sci-Fi fantasy of heroine Risa and Kaze whose hometown was destroyed by Kumo. And also, this story is a dark fantasy like the Grimm fairy tale. (AnimeNfo) Yet another spin-off the Playstation video game franchise. She was orphaned when her mother was killed in a car accident. Not wanting to burden anyone, she buys a tent and begins to live in a forest. She is determined to finish school in order to fulfill her mother's last wish. It turns out that the land Toru is living on belongs to the Soma family. She is quickly invited to live in the Soma house (all males), as long as she is willing to cook and clean. One of the Soma's, Yuki, is the most popular boy at Toru's high school. He is swooned by girls constantly and is even referred to as the "prince" of the school. His cousins Shigure, Yuki's guardian, and Kyo make up the rest of the household. Toru knows that her living environment is out of the norm, but things turn out to get stranger. The members of the Soma family are possessed by animals and they turn into their true selves when they are embraced by the opposite sex! You can imagine Toru's surprise when she witnesses their secret. She promises not to tell a soul, but the "cat" may already be out of the bag. (From ) Honda Tohru stumbles onto a family with a bit of a problem: various members are cursed to transform into animals if they are hugged by a person of the opposite sex. For the most part this is along the lines of the high school romantic comedy genre, but the curses add an interesting twist (and there are a number of dark secrets lurking in the background). Yeah, it's kinda disturbing. Sort of like Magical Stage Fancy La La (only not quite as endearing and with more plot holes). These generally don't seem to live too long. (blaidd) Based on a well-known story in China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan about a real journey of one Buddhist monk Genjo Sanzo (629 CE) who traveled from China to India. The story preludes the chaos that begins in Togenkyo which is the holy land where humans and demons used to live together peacefully and got along well. However after the attempt of someone to use the art of chemical and magic together from the ancient scripture to return life to Gyumao, the super demon, one of the five gods who rule the heaven. Classic, Adventure Mostly TV Series Availability Varies Apparently there have been a number of Anime versions of the classic tale The Jungle Book. The local video store had a couple of episodes buried in the Children's section, entitled 'The Law of the Jungle' and 'A New Friend'. The voice acting was pretty rough, but they had LOTS of wolf characters, and the story lines were intriguing. (Scratch) There are also some borderline things like "Ken the Wolf Boy," one of several versions of The Jungle Book that have been done in Japan. Lots of wolf characters, jungle cats, etc. Ken was one of the first Japanese animated shows and was brought over by a really cheesy outfit here. They were so cheap (or poor) that they only had _one_ person to do all the voices! (Luckily, it was Daws Butler, but it's still pretty obvious. Also, odd to hear wolves talking like Pixie & Dixie.) (Rune) =^_^= Jusenshi Garukiba (Beast Warrior Gulkeeva, Wild Knights {Gulkeeva,Galkiba,Galkeeba}) Extradimensional wolf, gorilla and bird morphs Science Fiction, Action TV (26 episodes, 1995) Not Available A wolf morph, a gorilla, and a bird morph (I think) from another dimension are fighting some bad guy's army which is planning to, um, take over the earth dimension, I think. (It's been a while.) They make friends with this human guy that is supposedly the chosen one who will help take the bad guys down. When the morphs do something, I think the human has to use a special amulet, he transforms the morph into a big, powerful, fully armored, fully animal version. (Wolf morph turns into a wolf, bird morph turns into a big bird, etc.) This show was indeed very furry, as it was not "humans with animal ears and tails" as a lot of anime might seem to be, but the characters were full blown morphs. (CB) I think that it is basically a rip off of "Sonic Soldier Borgman" in which Aliens think they have to invade Earth via a elementary school, and three teachers donning power armor to fight off the aliens. However in Galkeeba, it is three anthropomorphic characters in power armor saving Earth from the forces of the Darknoids. Greyfass (Wolf) is the serious and straight guy who always rushes into battle without thinking. Beakwood (Bird) is more sensitive calm and composed. And finally Gariell (Ape) who is a fun loving strong guy of the team who gets on great with kids, because he is a big kid at heart himself!! Later in the series Two more anthropomorphic characters appear: a Dog guy and a Lion guy. The first dozen or so episodes follow Yoko, a girl from Japan who doesn't seem to fit in there, as she deals with the various powers of this new world that are seeking her out. Some of the later episodes (in the second story arc) focus on one of the kirin. This is a more serious fantasy, not the usual lighthearted "girl gets transported to magical land" shows. The furry content is limited to her cat familiar who helps with advice. (Bryan Chaney) Kiki is a young witch searching for a city to adopt her. The story takes place in the early 20th century, on an Earth where somehow witchcraft is recognized and accepted as an occupation. Kiki tries to settle down in a city with her cat familiar Jiji (whom only she can hear), starting a delivery service. But soon Kiki gets depressed, and finds her powers waning and Jiji unable to talk to her anymore...This Miyazaki film was the top- grossing film in Japan for its year, beating out even the live-action movies. (Wei-Hwa Huang) Kiki, a young witch, goes out in the world to make her way, as is traditional. She must master her powers and earn her on way in a world that is suspicious of witches. She also could use flying lessons. (Harvey) =^_^= Kimba the White Lion (Jungle Emperor, Janguru Taitei, Jungle Taitei) Lion, other jungle animals Adventure, Contemporary TV (52 episodes, 1965; 26 episodes, 1966) Distributor: Right Stuf The classic furry anime. (PeterCat) I will say that the animation is pretty good, and one scene stuck in my head: While Kimba is on a ship (towards a zoo in America?) he looks up into a cloudless night sky, where his mother's face appears to him in the stars (sound familiar yet?), soon after, Kimba escapes the ship, and travels back home. Oh yea, and there was another (bad?) lion there with a scar across his eye... This series also spawned a series with Kimba in later life, titled "Leo the Lion" in the US. The animation is about on par with Speed Racer, although there are a few scenes where the animal characterization is pretty decent. You might be able to find these in bargain bins at your local Wal-Mart, Walgreens, etc. (Scratch) Kimba has also made a couple of cameos in two other Tezuka films, "Marine Express" and "Bander Book". (Rune) =^_^= KO Century Beast Warriors (KO Century Three Beastketeers, KO Seiki Beast Sanjuushi) Mermaid, Lion, Rooster and Turtle morphs, among many others Action, Adventure, Comedy, Mecha, Science-Fiction OAVs (3; 1992) Distributor: Right Stuf, to be released June 24, 2003 In the distant future, Earth has been split into two hemispheres: one a world ruled by giant machines and robots, and one where humans have long since been at one with nature's animals, creating many clans of animal-like humans called "beasts." When four young "beasts" from different clans get kidnapped, in their escape the uncover information about the world's past, and the fate of what might happen to their hemisphere in the future. The characters normally look like humans with animal characteristics, but turn into more complete morphs when they get excited or stressed. (Wei-Hwa Huang) BTW, the "3 Beastketeers" bit is a pun in Japanese. In Japanese the series was known as "KO Seiki Beast San Jushi." "San Jushi" is the Japanese equivalent of "3 Musketeers" but, as a gag, they replaced the Kangi for "gun" (musket = gun) with the symbol for "animal." Both are pronounced the same (ju) but have different meanings. Thus, "Musketeer" becomes "Beastketeer." (Rune) Apparently licensed in early 2002 by Right Stuf, as announced at a convention, but there's been no further word about it -- except for animated banner ads for Right Stuf ("Tear into savings!") And don't forget the Princess, Luna, who merges herself with a large lizard who reminds everyone of Godzilla (a saw it at an anime party...) Anyway, she merges herself with this "Godzilla"-like creature to defend her small kingdom from invaders. Later her older sister (Princess #1) gets herself kidnapped by a wyvern and Luna has to go rescue her. Lots of slapstick reminiscent of a good Wyle E. Coyote cartoon at times. Oh, and he says "Puu!" all the time. ^_~ (Tifa Lockheart) =^_^= Magical Nyan Nyan Taruto (Mahou Shojo Neko Taruto, Magic Cat Girl Taruto) Anthropomorphic cats, flying squirrel Comedy, Fantasy, Magic TV (12 episodes, 2001) Fansub: Adventures of Taruto, a young cat who grows to be convinced she is a lost princess from the magical cat kingdom. The first part of the series is mostly about her exploring her world (she and her owner recently moved to a new town, and she naturally has to survey her domain), but woe when cats that brought about the kingdom's downfall start to appear. This is interesting in that most of the cats, despite being drawn as small humans with cat ears and tails, are clearly regular cats (and treated as such by the real humans in the show). This brings about some rather poignant moments as the viewer runs into the feline limitations of these little people. (blaidd) =^_^= Mahou no Yousei Pelsia (Magical Fairy {Pelsia,Perusha,Persia}) Talking plushie lion Comedy, Magic TV Series (85 episodes, 1984) Fansub: Pelsia has a strange animal (a lion who lived with Pelsia in Africa and now transformed into a talking stuffed toy, so he can still be around Pelsia without causing too much trouble) as a friend. A sort of Minky Momo, she gets transformed into a pretty woman, with various dress. (Richard Vuong) I thought the lion got turned into a normal housecat. (blaidd) =^_^= Maris the Chojo (Maris the Wondergirl) Kitsune Adventure, Action Movie Commercial Release The anime of the manga "Maris the Chojo", where Maris's co-pilot is a small anthropomorphic kitsune by the name of Murphy (he has a very silly Irish accent in the anime, something which seems to have no relation to the original manga). Basically, the planet Maris comes from gets destroyed, and as many of the race who can leave in a big spaceship. The thing is, the people lived on a planet where the gravity was really intense, so on other planets they all have super strength and stuff :) The basic story revolves around Maris attempting to rescue a prince she believes has been abducted by evil kidnappers. It's rather stupid really :) (Foxy!) One additional thing here, Murphy has the ability to change into nine of just about anything, apparently one for each of his tails. For instance, at one point he turns into nine clones of Maris to fool the bad guys. This movie is rich in visual and physical humor, and had me rolling on the ground a couple of times. It also has one of the funniest credit sequences that I've ever seen in any kind of animation. (Scratch) =^_^= Miyuki-Chan in Wonderland (...Mirrorland) Minimalist furry characters (several mostly humans with ears and tails) Adventure, Erotic OAV Commercial Release A spoof of Alice in Wonderland (gee, never would have guessed that from the title). There is a skateboarding rabbit eared girl at the beginning, who sets off the whole surreal adventure. Miyuki-Chan then falls into a manhole, and finds herself... Well, somewhere else. Lots of lesbian and S&M overtures throughout the show, and the Cheshire Cat never looked like that before! Mmmmrrrrow! Overall not the best nor worst anime that I've seen, consider renting it first if you can. Watch out for the incredibly repetitive background music. (Scratch) =^_^= N =^_^= Neko no Ongaeshi (The Cat Returns) Anthro cats Adventure, Drama, Fantasy Movie (2002) Not Available The latest film from Studio Ghibli. This movie is somehow related to "Whisper Of The Heart" (released by Studio Ghibli in 1995). It follows Muta (the cat from "Whisper Of The Heart") and Baron (the cat statue in "Whisper Of The Heart"). The story is based on Neko no Danshaku (Baron of Cat) by Hiiragi Aoi. The main character of the story is Haru. Haru is a clueless, ordinary 17-year-old girl. She has no special abilities and neither is she an extraordinary beauty. When faced with reality, she is unable to make decisions for herself, thus often swaying to others' opinions to avoid challenge. One day, Haru saves the life of a cat without consideration of her own safety. The cat turned out to be the Cat Prince from the Kingdom of Cats; however, as a result Haru is trapped in the world of cats. Can Baron and Muta rescue Haru? The Moomins and the related Snorks both vaguely resemble hippos, but they're actually supposed to be creatures from Finnish fairy tales. (Tibo) From what I've heard, the "Moomin" series seems to be based off of Tove Janssen's Finn Family Moomintroll series. In which case, they aren't hippos, they're Things That Live In The Stove (except they don't anymore.) Besides the Moomins, there are the Snorks, Sniff (skinny and furry), Snufkin (small and wearing a big hat), Mymbles, Hemulens (all Hemulens wear dresses, even if they're male) and the Groll, which is a large and very cold sad thing -- at least, I felt sorry for her. The books are available translated into English; I used to read them when I was little. (Luriko-Ysabeth) OK, so this anime isn't probably technically furry, I'm going to keep it around, just because there doesn't seen to be a whole lot of information about it online. (Scratch) =^_^= Montana Jones Feline Spoof of Indiana Jones Classic, Adventure TV Series Not Available Montana Jones is 100% furry anime. It's a terrible Indiana Jones rip off. but a lot of fun. So far I've only been able to find one episode. (Elecro) I dunno, but this is the info I have. It is a joint Italian-NHK (Japan's national network) production. It features all felines, Montana being a tiger, I think. He's right, in that's a Indiana Jones rip off. Not bad looking animation, though. (Bryan Chaney) In this series all the characters are felines. It runs for 76 episodes, but the episodes follow a very similar pattern. E.G. Count Zero (The Baddie) travels to some part of the world to steal a priceless archaeological relic, and Montana (The Goodie) follows him to try to get it back. The coloration for the series is a bit loud, but the character design is really good. (Cpt Kangarooski) =^_^= Night on the Galactic Railroad Anthropomorphic felines Fantasy, Folklore Movie Distributor: Central Park Media A very arty film featuring anthropomorphic cats. I have no idea what it's really about, since the copy I have is in Japanese and it's very involved. (And my Japanese comprehension is comparable to that of your average Japanese 2 or 3 year old...) It's very pretty, though. (Elin Winkler) This was a great movie. It's about a boy, Giovanni (a cat), who has to take care of his mother while his father is away on an expedition. He always gets picked on because he comes to school tired from working, and also because his father's trip is thought by everyone to be an illegal hunting trip. The night is the festival of stars, and Giovanni, wandering off to get milk for his mother, runs into a field and suddenly appears on a train with his friend, Campanella. Throughout the rest of the movie, they witness surreal spectacles of curiosity and tragedy. The movie moves very slowly, like a Miyazaki film. It's beautiful and relaxing to watch. It might not make much sense upon first viewing, but the ending is a doozy, and ties up the entire movie's events on the train. There's lots to think about after it ends, and you want to watch it over again and again. There's a lot of metaphor and symbolism here, and it's easy to see it all. When you watch it over again, you can see the foreshadowing much clearer, and it is a cool experience. The music is also very nice. Highly recommended. One of the main characters is a cat-girl from a race of shapeshifting warriors (other from this race briefly appear a few times). On the whole a fairly enjoyable if not very ambitious show. At least the characters are pretty fun, if nothing else, but I'm not sure if one of the main gimmicks (spaceships that can attack with manipulator arms!) is original or just stupid. He is helped by a robot who is often more human than he is. (Harvey) =^_^= Please Save My Earth [MINOR] Giant Feline Morph Fantasy? Ecology? TV Series Commercial Release There's a shot of a large, bipedal cat (tabby, I think) in the end credits. The cat himself appears in episode 6. His name is Kya or something similar (the scream of shock people make when they first see him: KYAAA!!!), and he doesn't do terribly much other than stand around staring disconcertingly, but he is furry and very cute. (NB) =^_^= Pom Poko Tanuki (Pon Poko..., Heisei Tanuki Gassen Ponpoko) Tanuki Drama, Family, Fantasy, Contemporary, Folklore, Ecology Movie (1994) Licensed by Disney for U.S. distribution, not released yet (as if!) Announced to be released in the U.K. in late 2003 Features Japanese badgers, or "tanuki." They're sort of like badgers and sort of like dogs and have magical shape-shifting powers. It's a beautiful film, with an environmental message. (Elin Winkler) Story premise: Developers move in on Tanuki habitat. They attempt to fight back. Bounces around from deadly serious to comedic to purely animal to cartoonish, but very earnest approach and tone. A delight. Neat aspect: They can shape-change to resemble nearly anything. Many a situations involving this ability. As they go from playful to serious, they will change their appearance, even size. While they are quite anthropomorphized sometimes, they are still often ruled by their animal heritage. Interesting Japanese take on this plot complication. Oh! Almost forgot -- all the males have quite noticeable fuzzy cajones. Very honestly included. There are even a couple of instances where ... but I don't want to spoil the surprise. I'll just say that you might want to see this first before you show it to children. (Terry Whittier) Directed by Isao Takahata ("Grave of the Fireflies"). (blaidd) =^_^= Porco Rosso (AKA The Crimson Pig) Pig morph Adventure, Contemporary, Aviation Movie Distributor: Disney, DVD late 2003 (U.S. & U.K.) Another Hayao Miyazaki film, this time the lead character is a pig who is a pilot during World War I in Italy. Which is really weird, since all the other characters are human. (Bryan Chaney) Porco Rosso, the Crimson Pig, is an ex-war pilot who was cursed into the body of a pig-morph. The movie touches very lightly on the circumstances on the curse, and focuses instead on the challenge a young American pilot makes to Porco Rosso. With many beautifully animated flight scenes, this is another great work from Hayao Miyazaki. (Wei-Hwa Huang) The Adventures of the Crimson Pig, an extremely good flyer (no, in an airplane). He was a fighter in a war, saw how people treated each other, and decided he didn't want to be human anymore. No explanation of how, but he woke up a crimson pig. He battles air pirates in extremely accurate vintage aircraft. Will he ever become human? Perhaps when his faith in humanity is restored. Good for the airplane/WWI buff. (Harvey) =^_^= Princess Knight [MINOR] Big Bad Wolf Fantasy, Folklore Movie Not Available A girl child came down from heaven with a boy's adventurous heart. As females couldn't rule her native country, she was raised as a "prince." In between being unsuited for the job, she wore a mask and opposed evil usurpers. In the Red segment, the angel who gave her the heart steers her into the woods where the wolf (who can change size remarkably) lures her into his house. As his only weakness is "little girls" (he won't eat them), the forest creatures have to deck her up as a vaguely Snow White-ish girl. It gets hectic around that point. (Godzilla) =^_^= Princess Mononoke (Mononoke Hime) Wolf, pig and ape demi-gods (non-anthropomorphic) Folklore, Adventure, Violence, Romance Movie Distributor: Disney Directed by Hayao Miyazaki, and this one is one of the most beautiful ones he's done. And it has a heavy furry portion to boot. Set in roughly 15th Century Japan, the story follows a young Ainu(?) boy, Ashitaka. One day, he is attacked by a giant boar, corrupted with a strange worm-like creature. During the battle, Ashitaka is injured and contracts a corruptive disease. Exiled, he seeks the source, and finds "Iron Town," a village that specializes in steel and firearms production. This village is constantly being attacked by San, a young girl raised by Moro, a giant Japanese wolf (and the only two-tailed one I've seen), who resents the villagers' destruction of the forest to fuel their forges. ("Wilford" Bryan "Wolf" Chaney) Superb. A must-see. Upon its release, quickly broke box-office records in Japan, surpassing "Titanic" and holding the record until "Spirited Away" overtook it. (PeterCat) =^_^= Princess Tutu [MINOR] Various anthros Adventure, Drama, Fantasy, Magic, Romance TV (39 episodes, 2002) Fansub: A rather odd show based around... ballet. (How many shows are there where the battles are dances?) Magical princess must return the Prince's heart to him -- but with a bit of a twist. Seemingly random characters are anthropomorphic animals (the ballet instructor is a rather amusing cat), and Tutu herself is actually a transformed duck. (blaidd) =^_^= Puchi Puri Yuushi [MINOR][OCCASIONAL] Furry demons Fantasy, Magic TV (2002) Fansub: Based on the Gainax Princess Maker games. Yuushi [a 17-year-old girl under a spell so her body stopped aging at age 10] enrolls in the Princess Academy in the hopes of becoming the legendary "Platina Princess". The demon princess's servant is a sort of bat-cat-demon thingy. The episode in the Demon World (#7, I think) is _quite_ furry (and funny) -- cats and dogs duke it out. (blaidd) =^_^= R =^_^= Ranma 1/2 (Ranma Nibunnoichi) Humans who change into animals when doused with water Comedy, Adventure, Fantasy Movies, TV series Commercial Release (many episodes) It all started when a father and his son went to China to test their martial arts abilities, and end up falling into pools where they become cursed. The son transforms into a girl, and the father transforms into a Panda when they get doused in cold water. Hot water turns them back to humans... Lots of misadventures abound! (Scratch) Apparently in later episodes, we find that these two aren't the only ones to have fallen into the cursed pools. Among them are Kittenish Shampoo, that eternal lost boy Ryoga (aka the cutest little piglet in existences), and Mousse, the hunka hunka burning duck. (Frank) A few others, notably Pansuto Taro (Pantyhose Taro) who becomes a large monster (Yeti riding a Yak, with a crane holding a snake... later gets tentacles from the Octopus pool) (Cpt Kangarooski) "The Battle at Togen-kyo, the Battle for the Brides" ("Nihao My Concubine") -- This is the second Ranma 1/2 movie. In english (Viz) its called "Nihao, My Concubine"... It has not only the Ranma 1/2 cast, but also four animal men. The monkey-man, bird-man, dog-man and, very shortly, the lobster-man. Although these guys look VERY human, thanks to a magical water that makes things become male. (Cpt Kangarooski) The second Ranma 1/2 theatrical release features team Ranma's efforts to rescue their women from the clutches of Prince Toma and his manimal attendants. Ranma must save his fiancee from yet another marriage happy prince, but what will he give up to get the water that turns whatever being it touches into a man? Animal appearances by Toma's 3 aides, who, until exposed to the waters of Togenkyou, were a dog, a bird, and a monkey. (James Bateman) =^_^= Record Of Lodoss War [MINOR] Wolfen warriors and dragons Fantasy, Violence? Movie; 13 30-minute OAVs Commercial Release The story is based completely on Dungeons & Dragons; the main characters are a fighter, cleric, magic user, dwarf, elf, and thief. Not really any true furry characters here unless you count the countless orcs and werewolves they fight. (Wei-Hwa Huang) In the scene where the Dark Elf is first encountered, (tape two, I believe) his evil sidekicks resemble morphic canine/wolf creatures. They have digitigrade legs, lots-o pointy canine fangs, and although they are pretty much monotone in the fur color, the animation style from this series makes them look good. There are also a number of canine type creatures dressed in armor and wielding swords and other weapons during the huge battle in tape three. (Scratch) =^_^= S =^_^= Sailor Moon [MINOR] Intelligent talking cat familiar Fantasy, Magical Girls Movie, TV series Commercial Release Young girls turn into superheroines in sailor suits and save the universe on a regular basis, while Luna the cat tries to keep their airhead leader, Sailor Moon (aka Dumplinghead) focused on events. Luna also turned human in one of the movies, and romanced a human male. (Frank) =^_^= Samurai Pizza Cats (Kyatto Ninden Teyande) Numerous furries and mecha-furries? Action Team, Comedy TV Series, Movie Commercial Release (Saban) Strange show about mecha-animal society (I won't give away the ending) with the cats running a super pizza shop and battling the evil "Big Cheese" -- a cross-dressing fox -- and his crow minions. Also, the royal family is their friends. Too weird to explain in a small amount of space. (Rune) =^_^= Sherlock Hound (Famous Detective Holmes) Cartoony canine morphs Classic, Mystery TV Series Distributor: Family Home Entertainment; Pioneer (uncut DVDs) Hayao Miyazaki (Totoro, Porco Rosso, Kiki) did the design work and directed some episodes of this canine version of Sherlock Holmes. (blaidd) =^_^= Slayers [MINOR] Wolfy bad guy, dragon, occasional animal people (wolf, fish, fox) Action, Adventure, Comedy, Fantasy, Magic Movies, TV, OAV [CURRENT] Telecast on International Channel; Released by Software Sculptors Outrageous, off the wall comedy revolving around a female magician (who loses her powers during "that time of the month") and her male blonde partner/hero. The parts that I've seen revolve around a bunch of people trying to find a magical rock which increases a magician's powers by 100 fold. Oh course, the bad guy has a few sidekicks to help him out, one of them being a large, muscular (though kinda toony) wolf guy. Oh, and he's got big scary teeth too! Ooohhh... He can also regenerate, and is pretty handy with a sword as well. There's also a fish-guy (literally a big fish with legs and arms pasted on) and a number of other beast-men carnivores. (Scratch) Also keep an eye out for Slayers Special #2 : Lots of werewolf bad guys. "Slayers Try" -- One of the main characters is a female gold dragon who spends a lot of time as a human with a dragon's tail. I believe her name is Epheria or somesuch. (Walter Rabuck) The first season has a number of different animal people show up briefly (with a reoccurring werewolf). The third season (Try) has a dragon join the party as a main character, and a reoccurring fox-man minor villain (who does get a whole episode later in the series). The Premium movie (TV characters) features a group of octopi as the antagonists. (blaidd) =^_^= Sonic: The Anime An owl, hedgehog , Kitsune , spiny anteater , one mecha-furry, and One girl with a monkey tail Adventure, Action, Comedy Two OAVs Distributor: ADV Films This Anime is based on the SEGA game "Sonic the Hedgehog." It is about Sonic, Knuckles, and Miles Prower saving Earth of Darkness's president's daughter from the evil Dr. Eggman. Of course, this isn't easy, seeing they have a loafer owl on their hands at South Island, as well as a few robots! It has action, plot holes (It would make Archie PROUD!!!!), wild takes, comedy, and perverted scenes, as well as a touch of profanity!! It's worth shelling the same amount of money as a video game. =^_^= Sorcerer on the Rocks [MINOR] Werewolf Action, Fantasy, Magic OAV (2 episodes, year unknown) Distributor: ADV Films It's Shibas's job to rid his kingdom of powerful sorcerers and demonic monsters -- for a price, of course! In short, Shibas is a bounty hunter -- a very well paid bounty hunter! Although he may be debauched, debased and a real bastard at times, his services don't come cheap. He's that good! So good, that when a local nasty needs a powerful sorcerer to serve as a sacrifice, the "honor" goes to Shibas. It's just his bad luck that Shibas has no intention of cooperating... (Right Stuf) A story set in the Sorcerer Hunters world. One of the secondary characters is a werewolf. (blaidd) =^_^= Space Ark Sagittarius Various Furries? The other ship comes off worse and the actors go across to have a look. The ship's pilots (a man and a woman) have been killed in the accident but their baby daughter (Croana) is still alive. The actors adopt her and go to live on a nearby planet. The rest of the story is about her growing up and starting school. But the characters in this OAV (based on the popular manga) make it unmissable. "Dad" is a bug eyed robot and "Mom" is a purple furry blob with stick man arms. One of my fave charas in this show is "John" the dog guy who runs the local cinema, he's a bit of a John Carpenter nut which will become obvious when you see it. TV Special (53 minutes, 1996) Distributor: Mixx/Tokyopop Anime This is a visually psychedelic biography of one of Japan's most famous writers, Miyazawa Kenji. The furriness arises in that almost every person is drawn as an anthro cat. In addition, there's Ryo-ohki's big sister / owner / whatever, the over the top space pirate Ryouko! Who has catlike features (eyes, ears, and a tail when she wants to grow it) of her own, and can act quite catty at times... especially around her romantic rival, Princess Ayeka. (Crystal Poon) =^_^= Tokyo Mew Mew Cat-girls Action, Fantasy, Magic, Schoolkids, Science Fiction TV (20 episodes, 2002) Fansub: Ichigo Momomiya is an ordinary 12-year-old girl with a crush on a cute boy called Aoyama. Something strange happens when she goes on a date to a museum with Aoyama. A big earthquake obstructs an experiment conducted nearby. Genes of four nearly extinct Red Data Animals get injected into Ichigo and four other girls standing close by. Ichigo becomes Mew Mew, a heroine with wild cat genes. Now the five girls have a mission to protect the earth from aliens who are using animals to attack human beings. Up front, the five girls work as waitresses at a coffee shop called Cafe Mew Mew in Tokyo. However, once the aliens strike, the five girls turn into superheroes and go to the rescue. This is a real bio-fantasy! Ichigo is surrounded by young boys with strong characters, such as Aoyama who is really kind, Shirogane who is a bit mean, and the mysterious Akasaka. She is always falling in love and fighting aliens. Sometimes she feels worn out but she always tells herself, "I am fighting for the future of Planet Earth!" (OtakuWorld) Magical girl show where the characters gain animal aspects in their transformation sequences. Sailor Moon derivative with an endangered species motif. Sort of. Each Novel World is built by characters of stories (folk tales and fairy tales, etc.) precisely following their original plot and settings. The "Eto-Rangers" are the sprits of the twelve eto animals thought to be chosen by Buddha to indicate time, who band together to protect the Novel Worlds. The Eto-Rangers are Bakumaru, Spirit of Mice; Hors, Spirit of Cows; Gaou, Spirit of Tigers; Cream, Spirit of Rabbits; Drago, Spirit of Dragons; Nyorori, Spirit of Snakes; Pakaracchi, Spirit of Horses; Souffle, Spirit of Lambs ; Monk, Spirit of Monkeys ; Tart, Spirit of Monkeys ; Pochiro, Spirit of Dogs; and Uri, Spirit of Wild Boar. They're ruled by Princess Aura, goddess of Murgen, and assisted by Kirinda, a living machine in the form of a kirin (flying unicorn) that transports the Eto-Rangers to each Novel World and functions as their base of operations. According to legend, cats were excluded from Budda's choice of the twelve eto animals, so Nyanmar, the spirit of cats, decides to destroy "stories" for revenge. She becomes the Queen of the Evil-Spirited Monsters, who begin to invade the Novel Worlds to distort the time and place of each story. Man-beast Amano Jyaku is obsessed with finding the fabled Overfiend, an omnipotent demon who manifests every 3,000 years as a giant tentacled humanoid and leaves a wide trail of rape and carnage in his wake. This is a very controversial and dark hardcore series with an epic plot, which is considered to be the first "erotic horror" anime to feature tentacles as penetralia, and has spawned many imitations. (Anime Hentai Primer) =^_^= Urusei Yatsura [OCCASIONAL] Excellent werewolf transformation, other furries Fantasy? Adventure? Action? Movie and TV series Commercial Release I was fortunate in finding an episode entitled "I Howl at the Moon" the other day... Definitely one of the better furry tales that I've seen. The basic plot is that Lum cooks up a batch of treats for Ataru, but kinda-sorta gets the recipe mixed up with a Wolf-Man transformation spell. I won't say too much more for fear of giving it away, but you have to see it for the scene when he has to explain things to his parents... (Scratch) There are many other furry episodes of this long-running series, including one where Ataru falls for and fights for a beautiful white cat-woman, several that feature a kitsune (fox) who has fallen in love with Shinobu and keeps trying to turn her into a fox, etc. (Rune) Lum's ex-fiance, Rei, is a glutton and turns into a tiger when given a bowl of rice. (Harvey) From the Tomobiki-cho web site: Episode 43. Fear of Meow (Animeigo tapes, Volume 5 or 6). Atop the Moroboshi house, Ataru, Ten, and Lum meet a half cat/half woman named Misuzu. As a human, Misuzu was dying and she melded with her cat to her present state. Ataru and Ten fight a cat with an eye patch to see who will get to kiss Misuzu, and turn her into a full human or cat. I don't think that they are supposed to be any species in particular, but they resemble a kinda of cross between a raccoon and a wolf. Actually, I personally think they look like the creatures from "The Architect of Sleep," if they had ever been animated. It was also refreshing to see the furries portrayed as good guys (though there was a bit of confusion when they first ran into each other). When she develops a friendship with a boy in her class, she finds out that he has already decided he wants to become a violin maker and go abroad to study his craft. Seeking to both become closer to him and find direction in her life, she also sets a goal for herself: try to become a writer of fantasy stories. Movie Import (Vol 1-6) Two agents search for a young man who has a strange affinity for wolves. Based on the comic WolfCrest by Hirai Kazumasa. (S&S). A secret project trying to create were-beings finds itself under attack from real were-beasts. The Americans (werewolf) and Asians (were-tigers) team up to destroy the project. (Rune) I managed to pick up an imported Laser Disk of episode one of this series, and I was majorly disappointed. Mind you, the version that I have is untranslated, so I didn't know much of what was going on plot wise, which didn't matter that much as it was the visuals I was interested in. Unfortunately, it fell quite short of what I was expecting. At the beginning of the show, there was a pack of wolves running across the snow, which was decent, but when it got to the part where Wolf Guy transforms from his human form, they just drew an image of him as a human, and him as Wolf Guy, and flashed between them for a couple of seconds. Very lame. The one redeeming part was at the very end of the episode where the female Wolf morph makes a brief appearance. The show needed more of her. However, the insert with black and white character sketches was a nice little bonus. (Scratch) =^_^= Wolf's Rain Wolves projecting a human appearance Science Fiction, Drama, Violence TV Series, began airing in Japan January 2003 [CURRENT] Fansub: Likely to be the hot new anime series of 2003. As the Earth enters another Ice Age in the not too distant future, all creatures are on the brink of extinction. Wolves have not been seen in 200 years ... except for rumors and legends. Unknown to humans, the last of the wolves are living among them in the domed cities, disguised in human form, to survive by stealing food. One, Tsume ("Claw"), leads a band of young delinquents. One day another wolf, Kiba ("Fang"), ventures into the city and gets into a fight with Tsume -- Kiba believes Tsume shames the wolves by his actions. But their fight is interrupted, and Kiba is shot and captured. He escapes with the help of the janitor, who is really the timid wolf Hige ("Whiskers"). Another wolf, Toboe ("Howling"), tries to make friends with a human girl, but ends up scaring her when he reveals his true form, and Tsume rescues him from being killed. Forced to flee the city, the four embark upon a search for a legendary gateway to Paradise, which, according to old tales, can be found only by the wolves, at the end of the world -- and where, Kiba believes, the wolves can live with pride. Unfortunately, the wolf-forms aren't seen very much, only in long shots, some fight scenes and occasional close-up flashes to "remind" us that these are really wolves. The wisdom of this stylistic choice seems dubious in a scene in episode 4 when the four, shown in human form, feast on carrion in the wilderness.
