Based on Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials universe (including The Golden Compass, recently made into a movie) in which everyone's soul is represented by an animal with a real, physical presence linked to their human self, always nearby. These animal souls -- or daemons (NOT demons) -- are the soul, they speak and act essentially as the human would. The setting is in London, about 50 years before the events of The Golden Compass, so as not to interfere with the characters in the movie (trying to take such characters is not allowed on the MUCK).
