An alternate earth that is infused with magic. Magic is a force that flows like weather, but slowly, from areas of higher pressure to those of lower pressure. Two hundred years ago, there was a great Magical Storm (it is unknown by any alive if it was natural or caused by an intelligent being). It did some zany things, including (but not limited to) granting intelligence and universal speech to vertebrate animals of the land and air, creating new and fantastical animals, and re-forming the land masses in a reasonably non-cataclysmic way. All history before the Magical Storm (many animals may refer to this event as the "Great Awakening", and many humans refer to it as the "Great Change". Fantasy creatures sometimes call it "Genesis", but they are a little full of themselves at times) has been lost, for the few societies that kept it were human and were all but wiped out. Artifacts and a few ruins may remain, but the Magical Storm has wiped many of them clean. Even when these are found, these items and ruins are not understood by the current living races.

Still, two hundred years is enough time for the current intelligent races to form the beginnings of their own societies (or not, depending on the species). Socially inclined species are now even more social with the added "gift" of intelligence and logic. And with beginning societies comes both benefits and burdens.
